Nea Triglia Field School

The Nea Triglia project offers students and volunteers the chance to gain hands-on experience in archaeology. Whether you are just starting your archaeological journey or are looking to further your skills, the Archaeological Field School combines academic learning objectives with practical skills to provide a comprehensive training to archaeological fieldwork. 

Participants will learn excavation and survey techniques, recording methods, pottery and artifact processing, and digital documentation. During the campaign they will also attend lectures on archaeological theory and local history. Excursions to nearly sites and museums will further the understanding of the regional history both ancient and modern. In agreement with their home university, students can get ECTs for participating in the Field School. 

The learning objectives include:  

  • Learning about archaeological indicators in the cultural landscape 
  • Gaining knowledge about a broad spectrum of pottery and other archaeological finds 
  • Working with a chronologically diverse site 
  • Gaining experience in archaeological field work, material analysis and data management 
  • Survey methods, total station, iDig, QGIS, pottery analysis, drawing techniques, finds processing 
  • Learn about non-destructive and non-invasive research methods 
  • Working within an archaeological project and contributing to the exploration of a new site 

 

What to expect as a participant 

The students and volunteers will follow a diverse set of activities during their stay in Nea Triglia. A general schedule will be followed but this can differ depending on the needs of the excavation, survey, or processing lap.  

General schedule: 

  • 07.00-08.00: Breakfast 
  • 08.00-09.00: Transport to the site 
  • 09.00-12.00: In the field (survey or excavation) 
  • 12.00-13.00: Lunch break in the field 
  • 13.00-15.00: In the field (survey or excavation) 
  • 15.00-16.00: Transport to the lab and sort break 
  • 16.00-18.00: Lab work  
  • 18.00-19.00: Break 
  • 19.00: Dinner

  • two prior to the survey 
    • Introduction to Mediterranean archaeology and Nea Triglia  
    • Introduction to survey methods and interpreting data 
  • four on location 
    • Pottery 
    • Database and total station 
    • GIS 
    • Presentations/overall discussion 

Weekly excursions 

During the weekend no archaeological work will take place. Sundays are reserved as a rest days to recover from the week’s fieldwork, but every Saturday an excursion will be organized for example to Ancient Olynthos, the sanctuary of Zeus Ammon, the Byzantine museum, and the Archaeological museum in Thessaloniki.
